British Texels hit the top in Mexico

British Texel genetics have secured a first for the Texel breed in Mexico, clinching the interbreed championship at the Mexican National Sheep Show.

The winning animal, a ewe from Javiar Lara’s flock is by a ram which is the result of embryos exported to Mexico, being by Caereinion Ace and out of a Logie Durno-bred dam by Elmscleugh Assasin, and is out of a dam by Langford Adder Again out of a dam which is also by Caereinion Ace.

The embryos and semen which resulted in the breeding of the ewe were exported to Mexico in 2020 by the Ingram family, Logie Durno and Granite, and Robert Laird, Cambwell, following the re-opening of the country for UK exports that year.

Society chief executive John Yates said the success of British genetics in Mexico was great to see and another mark of the success of British Texels abroad.

“The demand for British Texel genetics from Mexico and other South American sheep breeding countries remains strong and is buoyed by the successful impact previous importations have had in those countries.”
