Society Board

The role of the Board

The board is responsible for overseeing the performance and setting the overall direction of the business. It sets the Society’s strategic aims and appetite for risk, approves commercial and financial strategy, oversees the board’s conduct and that of its employees and continuously monitor performance. It meets in spring, summer and autumn.

Board structure

The board comprises 13 non executive directors and a chief executive. Each director also has charity trustee responsibilities. Each director is democratically elected from the Society’s 13 regions. A director’s term is four years, with a maximum of three terms permitted in succession when successfully re-elected.

The board meets three times a year to focus on key areas of member services, business, finance, events and breed development. The Society’s finance and general committee meets quarterly to review financial performance. A Youth Development committee elected from five regions across the UK supports recommendations to the board and furtherance of the Society’s Youth Development Programme.

Director’s commitments

Throughout the year Society directors attend board meetings, along with sales, shows and events within their regions and across the UK. Each director is provided with all the necessary documentation in support of their director and trustee roles, to ensure they are familiar with company and charity legislation.

Operational responsibility

The Society strategies are implemented by the chief executive, who is supported by a small team of skilled staff. The board also engages support from consultants with finance, accounting, legal and technical expertise.
