Hugely positive Welsh Sheep event

Welsh Sheep proved to be another hugely successful and positive day for the Society, with commercial customers and Society members thronging the Society stand throughout the day.

Featuring Texel x Mule ewes suckling Texel sired lambs, kindly supplied by Anthony Turner, Newtown, the Society’s stand picked up first place in the Breed Society trade stand competition.

Society chief executive said winning the red ticket in this competition was a great achievement and backed up the work done by Society staff and members in putting on a first class display.

“Welsh Sheep is always a busy event and this proved no different with a huge crowd descending on what is clearly an excellent sheep farm to see the latest industry developments.

“It was great to speak to so many committed sheep producers benefitting from using Texels within their businesses and the support of local Society members was excellent,” said Mr Yates.

Engaging stand visitors was the Society’s guess the weight competition in which visitors were challenged to guess the weight of the lambs suckling the ewes on the stand. The correct weight was 119.4kg, with Gwilym Lewis, Llanbadarn Fynydd, guessing closest of more than 160 entrants.

Away from its own stand the Society’s Youth Development Programme sponsored the event’s NSA Next Generation young shepherd competition, with 20 eager and highly skilled competitors tackling a range of tasks before 17 year old, Mena Protheroe was named as the winner.

In a rare feat Miss Protheroe won not only the overall title, but also that for the best under 21 competitor. Currently studying Agriculture at Llysfasai College, Miss Protheroe, who’s family run a beef and sheep farm at Beulah, said she was over the moon to have won. Claiming second spot was, Gethin Rhys Roberts, with Jamie Farmer picking up third prize.
