With more than 17% of the national flock carrying Texel genetics it is no surprise to see Texel cross ewes with lambs at foot dominating the ewe and lamb trade across the UK.
Monday’s sale at Skipton saw Texel crosses top both the ewe and lamb sections and the hogg and lamb sections.
Topping the ewes and lambs was a pen of Texel cross ewes with twin lambs at foot which sold to £290 an outfit, with these coming from M Banyard, Haslingden. Meanwhile, in the hoggs with lambs at foot to sale leader were a pen of five Texel cross hoggs with single lambs at foot, with these also making £290 an outfit.
Texel cross ewes with singles also enjoyed a good trade, hitting a high of £170 an outfit and levelling at £158.
Further north at Caledonian Marts, Stirling, last week’s sale saw Texel cross hoggs with singles at foot hit a high of £135/life for the McNees, Woodend.
And across town at UA Stirling, Texel cross hoggs with single lambs peaked at £168/life for J W Kay, Gass, with others from the McNees, Woodend, selling at £150 a life. The same centre saw Texel cross gimmers with single lambs at foot sell to a high of £115/head.
Bentham’s annual sale of hoggs with lambs at foot resulted in a flying trade for the Texel crosses on offer, selling to a top of £410/outfit for a pen of five from E J Ward and Sons, with others from N L and C J Brown, Claughon, making £400/outfit, with the entire entry averaging £256/outfit.
