Texels drive spring lamb trade

Texel sired lambs are once again driving the prime sheep trade across the country as the sheep sector continues to enjoy buoyant returns significantly ahead of last year’s prices.

Tuesday’s sale at Bridgnorth saw Texels top the prices at 369p/kg, some 41p/kg ahead of the market average for the day, while at Ashford on the same day Texel sired lambs hit 339p/kg, up 22p/kg on the day’s average.

Meanwhile, Monday’s sale at Lanark was led on a per head basis by Texels at £164/head and on a p/kg basis by more Texels at 402p/kg, up 60p/kg on the day’s average, with others on the same day selling to 397.5p/kg and 380p/kg.

At Carlisle on the same day the best Texels were up to 417.35p/kg, 67p/kg ahead of the market’s average on the day, with Dutch Texel cross lambs making up to 439.5p/kg, with others at 436.8p/kg.

Not far away at Cockermouth Texels led the trade at the end of last week when hitting 420.7p/kg and £201.5o/head. Strong demand on the day saw more Texels at £195.50/head.

Demand currently shows no sign of slowing, with auctioneers reporting an upturn in prices in the first few days of this week and suggestions that trade is likely to stabilise at current levels for a number of weeks to come.
