Successful day at Welsh Sheep for Texel Society

Yesterday’s Welsh Sheep Event, Glynllifon, was another great success for the Society with visitors flocking to the Society’s stand at the event to learn the latest updates on the breed and see first-hand excellent examples of Texels being used for commercial success.

Another key draw to the stand was the Society’s guess the weight competition, with more than 200 people entering this competition to win a weigh crate worth more than £1000.

This competition, kindly sponsored by Ritchie, required entrants to guess the combined weight of four Texel sired crossbred lambs out of Suffolk x Lleyn ewes. The four lambs, loaned by William Williams, Gwynedd, had a combined weight of 140kg, with four entrants guessing the correct weight.

These four correct answers will be entered in to a draw along with winners from the remaining NSA events, with the first out of the hat winning the weigh crate.

Society chief executive John Yates said the event had been a great success for both the Society and the Welsh sheep industry as a whole. “The Society stand was busy throughout the day and it was clear from many conversations how much of an important part the Texel breed is playing in the success of many Welsh sheep farming businesses.”

Alongside the Society’s own competition it also sponsored the event’s Next Generation Young Shepherd Competition which drew an entry of 20 competitors from across Wales.

Taking the top prize was the winner of the under 21 year old section, Tomos Glyn Davies, Denbigh. Mr Davies nows goes forward to represent the Welsh region at the National Finals at the Sheep Event, Malvern, in July 2020.

The Society’s YDP coordinator Ailish Ross said the competition had once again showcased the excellent calibre of young people coming in to the sheep industry.
