Successful day at Sheep South West

The Society, supported by the South West Texel Club, enjoyed a successful day at Sheep South West where, despite the wet conditions, a good crowd sought out the latest developments in the sheep industry.

Society chief executive John Yates said the event had been highly successful, with both Society members and commercial farmers visiting the Society stand during the day.

“It was great to be back at Sheep South West after a four year absence and to speak to so many enthusiastic and clearly dedicated sheep farmers.

“The dominance of Texel in the UK industry is replicated in the South West and commercial lamb producers visiting the Society stand were clearly seeing the benefits of using the breed in their flocks.”

Mr Yates said the support of the South West Texel Club had been tremendous. “As with any regional event, having Club members on the stand is a real asset and the sheep provided by the Burrough family’s Godworthy flock were a great addition to the stand.”

The Socieyt’s guess the weight competition proved popular, with entrants having to guess the combined weight of all the ewe and pair of lambs on the stand.

The correct combined weight was 142.5kg and the winner of the competition was Matthew Derryman, who was closest with an answer of 141kg. Matthew farms in East Devon, manging 1100 store lambs over the winter and wins a selection of Society merchandise.
