Society members and all those associated with the livestock sector are being urged to respond to the DEFRA consultation on animal welfare in transport, to ensure the farming sector’s views are heard.
Society chief executive John Yates says there are a number of key areas within the consultation which could have a dramatic impact on members if they are not challenged at the consultation stage.
“Issues such as minimum and maximum temperatures at which livestock can be transported as well as minimum space allowances and headroom requirements for livestock in transit.
“A number of the proposals within the consultation if implemented would have a dramatic and lasting effect on the UK livestock sector. I urge all Society members and friends of the Society to respond to the consultation before it closes on 28th January.”
Mr Yates said members were welcome to use all or parts of the Society’s response to the consultation in formulating their own responses.
The full consultation can be found here and members can respond to the consultation using DEFRA’s online response portal or by emailing their response to AnimalWelfare.Consultations@defra.gov.uk
