This week saw the Society stand visit NSA North Sheep, Rathmell, North Yorkshire, with the event proving to be another busy one for the Society
The Society stand was packed with visitors throughout the day as people flocked to the stand to take part in the Society’s summer competition, challenging event visitors to guess the weight of the ¾ Texel prime lambs on the stand, kindly loaned by Wannops Farm Ltd, Morecambe, to be in with a chance of winning a Ritchie weigh crate worth more than £1000.
Kindly sponsored by Ritchie, the competition drew plenty of interest from visitors, with more than 450 people entering on the day.
The correct answer was 200kg, with the five correct entries being entered in to a draw along with winner from last month’s Welsh Sheep and the remaining NSA events this summer, with the first out of the hat winning the weigh crate.
Society chief executive John Yates said North Sheep had once again proven a great success for the Texel breed, with the host farmers once again making good use of the breed in their breeding programme.
“The breed’s influence in the north of England as both a terminal sire and a maternal crossing sire is well known and the interest shown in the breed at North Sheep was testament to the desire from commercial producers to add value to their stock in these uncertain times.
“Texel’s ability to produce lambs suited to a variety of uses, including for sale as prime lambs as well as breeding replacements is a key part in reducing the inherent risk associated with sheep farming for many producers in the north of England.”
The day was a great success for the Society, NSA and the northern English sheep industry as a whole, added Mr Yates.
