Knap Grumpy daughter brings the smiles at Royal Welsh

Leading what judge Dye Clark, Clarks, said he felt was ‘one of the best shows of Texels at the Royal Welsh in recent years’ was a gimmer from Ellie Owen’s Topwood flock.

Clinching a first Royal Welsh championship for Miss Owens was AOS2500345, a daughter of the 170,000gns Knap Grumpy out of a homebred dam by Rhaeadr Cracker and was one her first show outing.

Dye Clark said she was his pick of the day as soon as he saw her in her class and she stood out from start to finish. “She’s a great modern Texel female, a super carcass, great top and superb style.”

It was one of the season’s most prolific winners which followed in reserve, shearling ram Mellor Vale I Spy from Eammon Vaughan, Partridge Nest and Nick Legge, Thornbury.

He was bought at the Solway and Tyne’s Club sale last year for 12,000gns, and had already been breed and interbreed champion at Staffordshire and breed and reserve interbreed champion at Royal Three Counties, as well as breed and reserve interbreed champion at Great Yorkshire just a week earlier.

I Spy is a son of last year’s Great Yorkshire breed and interbreed champion, Uppermill Highway Express, and is out of a dam by Haymount Fan Dabi Doze

Taking the reserve female championship was the winner of the ewe lamb class from Ellie and Iwan Pearce-Morgan, Windmill. This was PMN2600015, an Auldhouseburn Istabraq daughter out of a Garngour-bred dam by Midcombe Fireball.

Then taking the reserve male championship was  the leader from the ram lambs from the Watkins family, Cwmcerrig. Their tup lamb, WJJ2602057, is a son of the homebred Cwmcerrig In Charge and is out of a homebred dam by Deveronvale Ace of Diamonds.

In the aged rams, the win went to I E Williams with Walston Hard As Nails, a Brijon Foxy son out of a dam by Elmslcleugh Bright Spark.

And, top spot in the aged ewes was taken by young breeders Archie and Harry Stamp, Bowbridge, with their Sportsmans bred ewe,  BGS2407220. She’s another Knap Grumpy daughter, this time out of a dam by the 80,000gns Procters El Presidente.

Leading the group of three were the Lightfoot family, Llidiart.
