Mellor Vale I Spy follows in his father’s footsteps at GYS

Shearling ram Mellor Vale I Spy from Eammon Vaughan, Partridge Nest and Nick Legge, Thornbury, was the victor at this year’s Great Yorkshire Show, adding another championship to his already successful summer season.

Purchased at the Solway and Tyne’s Club sale last year for 12,000gns, I Spy has already been breed and interbreed champion at Staffordshire and breed and reserve interbreed champion at Royal Three Counties.

I Spy is a son of last year’s Great Yorkshire breed and interbreed champion, Uppermill Highway Express, and is out of a dam by Haymount Fan Dabi Dozi. He fell just short of replicating his sire’s success of last year, collecting the reserve interbreed championship on the third day of the show.

Judge Richard Henderson, Ballynahone, found his reserve champion in the reserve male champion and second placed entry from the open shearling ram class, Jeff and Jennifer Aiken and family’s Haddo Impressive.

This one is a son of the 12,000gns Milnbank Hercules and out of a dam by Hexel Django and was bought in partnership with Steven Renwick, Craig Douglas, for 6000gns at Lanark last year.

In the female classes, it was the aged ewe winner from Roy and Liz Campbell, Cowal, that took the championship. This was CKC2315118, a Milnbank Freddie II daughter out of a dam by Teiglum Charmer which was also dam of the Cowal ewe which was champion at Textravaganza in 2024.

Reserve female honours fell to James Porter’s Saltcotes flock with his gimmer, PTJ2500224. She’s a Hexel Geronimo II daughter out of a homebred dam by Hexel Freaky Blinder.

James Porter also took the red ticket in the ewe lamb class, winning here with PTJ2600326. She’s by Hexel Hidden Asset and out of another homebred dam by Hexel Freaky Blinder and from the same family as the 45,000gns 2024 Lanark champion Saltcotes He’s A Belter.

In the day’s opening class, the aged rams, the winner was Sam Barker’s Strawfrank Grandad Robin, with this being a Midcombe Fireball son out of a dam by Strawfrank Catalyst.

Then in the homebred shearling rams it was Peter Logndin, Wellingley, who took the top spot with LJW2501912, an Auldhouseburn Fancy Pants son out of a dam by Cowal Dakota.

Leading the open ram lambs was another from James Porter, PTJ2600329. This Rue Wood Indiana son is out of a dam by Haymount Humdinger.

And the Gold Tier recorded ram class was then won by the Mosey family with their lamb from the Blackdale flock, UBM2614488. He’s an Ettrick Inferno son out of an Ettrick dam by Hope Valley Dazzler and has a top 10% index.

Topping the pairs was Eammon Vaughan, Partridge Nest, with this pair going on to claim the interbreed pairs championship under judge, Steve Smith, PenParc.

Winning the group of three was James Porter, Saltcotes.
