Strong demand at Welshpool

Demand for shearling rams at the Shropshire and Borders Texel Club sale, Welshpool, was exceptional, with the average rising more than £100 on the year and a top call of 2900gns.

Leading the prices was the pre-sale champion and the very first ram in the sale, Preenbank In Quick from Fred and Bryn Robinson.

Sired by Hollyhurst G Force, this one is out of a dam by Clun Captain Jack and was bought by local buyers A Rees and Son, Caereinion, Welshpool.

Next in line at 2600gns was Oak Farm Indiana from the Hardman family’s pen. This Haymount Forefather son had been reserve champion in the pre-sale show and is out of a dam by Hartside Carlton and was taken by Towyn Developments, Aberhafesp.

Then making 2400gns was Oak Farm Ignition from the same home. He’s by Midlock Grand Master and out of another Hartside Carlton daughter and was the pick of D R Owen and Sons, Sandilands, Gwynedd.

Another from the Hardmans then traded at the same money, with this being Oak Farm Inspector. He’s by Cae Coed Himself and out of another Carlton daughter and sold in a shared deal to Tom Morgan. Morwood and the Gibbs family, Bettonfield.

Clun Icebreaker from the Williams family then followed that at 2200gns, with this Teiglum Fieldsman son being out of a dam by Clun Athlete. He found a new home with previous buyers, Towyn Developments.

A pair then followed that at 2100gns, the first of which was another from the Williams family, Clun Iron Mike. He’s another by Teiglum Fieldsman and is out of a dam by another homebred sire, Clun Baker. Taking him were M P B Ashton and Son, Cefn Coch.

The same buyer then bought the second at this money, with this being Millend Instinct from Russell and Gill Watkins. He’s by Harehead Governor and out of a dam by Strawfrank Yoda and sold with a top 25% index.

Three then sold at 2000gns, with two of these coming from the same pen as the sale leader from the Robinsons. First away at this price was Preenbank Insulted Daily, a Preenbank H1 son out of a dam by Roxburgh Colossus. He went home with S Hudson, Lower Frankton.

The second from Preenbank at this level was Preenbank Ivorbiggun. This Hollyhurst G Force son is out of a dam by Duhonw Dreamer and sold to J P L Owens, Rhayader.

And the final 2000gns call came for another from the Hardman family, Oak Farm Iceberg. Sired by Cressage Frost, he’s out of a dam by Cowal Fury and was knocked down to A L Walker, Bettws.

Ram lambs

Leading the ram lambs at 1000gns was Jamie Woosnam’s Trefeg Jet, a Caereinion Goliath son out of a Caereinion-bred dam by Loosebeare Chief. He was taken by Ed Samuel for the Hendre flock.

Second best here at 800gns was another from the same home, Trefeg Jimmy. This is a Thornbury Hulk son out of a dam by Knap Angus Ogg. Buying him were Messrs Hewson for the Vallum flock.

Averages; 333 shearling rams £1117.54, eight ram lambs £557.81 (Welshpool Livestock Sales).
