Texel-sired primestock have been earning premiums prices at livestock markets around the country, often exceeding sale averages by as much as 20%.
At United Auctions’ Stirling centre Texel cross hoggets sold to a high of 465p/kg, with others close behind at 463p/kg on a trade that levelled at 450.42p/kg.
Meanwhile, at Kirby Stephen Texels hit a top of 506.4p/kg, with the market average sitting at a healthy 466.27p/kg. The same sale saw a strong demand for Texel cull ewes too, with these peaking at £300/head.
Across at Longtown it was a similar tale, with Texel cross hoggs hitting a high of 484p/kg on a trade that had an SQQ of 415.94p/kg. Texel culls were again flying here, selling to £410/head, having peaked at £455/head the previous week.
And at St Boswells Texel-sired hoggets were again in demand, selling to 456p/kg, with the trade here levelling at 408p/kg.
The south west of England saw another rip-roaring trade for culls when Texels peaked at £400/head at Exeter, with further pens at £398. Hereford, meanwhile, saw a top of £367 for Texel culls, while in the midlands, Melton Mowbray saw Texel culls hit £312/head.
The first of the new season lambs were also in demand here, with Texels selling to 433p/kg while Texel cross hoggets hit 455p/kg at the same centre which saw an average of 416.47p/kg.
Across the Irish sea, Ballymena Market saw Texel cull ewes hitting a top of £358/head, with Texel cross hoggets up to 472.5p/kg.
