The Texel Sheep Society is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year and will stage a number of unique and exciting events to help breeders, both young and old, celebrate the occasion.
The Texel Society is proud of the British sheep industry and in recognition of this has provided major sponsorship of the National Sheep Association events at Malvern and the Scottish Borders this year.
RENEWED FOCUS
But while the 40th anniversary will be a nod to the breed’s past, a renewed focus on the future will also be central to the celebrations. The younger generation in the industry is fundamental to the future of the Society’s youth development programme, which it says will gather pace throughout the year and be the centre of a number of events.
As a breed and Society, the Texel has come a long way over the last 40 years, having grown to become the dominant sire in the UK, with 20 per cent of all sires used in the UK being Texel sires.
The Society says it believes Texel breeders have worked hard to cooperate, both together and with their commercial customers, to ensure the breed meets the demands of the market, and says its rise to its current position is a mark of the dedication shown by breeders.
PERFORMANCE
In the Society’s 40th anniversary year, it says breeders are placing even greater emphasis on improving performance, utilising DNA technology and understanding the changing market.
The Society has a significant number of sales and as part of the celebrations the Texel Society is delighted to sponsor this Stockjudging competition…. GOOD LUCK!
