Texels dominate prime, cull and breeding sheep trade

Prime sheep continue to attract buyers across the country, with both old season lambs and cull ewes in ready demand from the north of Scotland to the south of England and all points in between.

Texels continue to be at the top of the trade, particularly at handy weights in the lamb trade, with cull ewes trading at near record levels in many markets.

In Aberdeenshire, Thainstone Mart saw prime lambs hitting £154 and 295.5p/kg for Texels crosses, with cull ewes hitting a top of £268, with others at £260 apiece.

Meanwhile, United Auctions, Stirling, saw a high of £150 for prime lambs, with a peak of 329p/kg and cull ewes hitting £230 and £210.

South of the border at Wooler the Texel sired prime lambs were stronger again, selling to a top of £162, with more at £160, with ewes trading to a top of £219/head.

Across into Wales and Welshpool’s cull ewe trade was led by Texels at £245, with many other similarly bred ewes at £200 or more.

The same centre saw Texel breeding sheep eagerly sought after too, with the early couple trade hitting a high of £302 an outfit for Texel cross ewes with twins at foot.

Similarly, Hallworthy, Devon, saw Texel ewes with twins sell to £258 an outfit, with Texel culls ewes selling to £200 apiece.

And at Sedgemoor Texel cross ewes with twins peaked at £298/outfit. Back in the north and Hexham’s trade hit a high of £210 for culls and £128.50 for prime lambs.
