Texel cross prime lambs are once again proving to be well sought after across the UK as lamb prices, while not reaching the dizzy heights of last year, remain at strong levels despite increasing numbers coming forward.
Monday’s sale at Skipton saw heavy lambs once again sell well, with a top price of £130 per head for 60kg Texels consigned by Clitheroe’s John Barnes, which returned to Lancashire when claimed by Rossendale wholesale butchers A and D Meats.
J W Stockdale, of Burnsall, made £124 each for 56kg Texels sold to Kendall’s Farm Butchers in Pateley Bridge and Harrogate.
And, F W and J M Eddington, of Bell Busk, sold 52kg Texels at £119 to Countrystyle Meats Farm Shop and Restaurant in Lancaster.
G A Hewitt and Sons, of Giggleswick, also caught the eye with 42kg Texel lambs at 252.4p, or £106, to Leonard Wood and Sons in Scammonden, Huddersfield.
Meanwhile, at Lanark, Lawrie and Symington’s sheep ring saw 919 prime lambs sold to £119 for Texels and 254p for another pen of Texels to, additionally, a large show of 1474 cast sheep was topped at £150 for Texel ewes.
Across in the west of Scotland at Ayr, Texels topped the trade at 230p/kg, with Texel ewes also leading the way here in the cull section at £129 apiece.
And at Kirby Stephen on Tuesday Kevin Sowerby, Terrys Farm, Ormside, sold 49kg Dutch Texel cross lambs to £116 which were bought by Steadman’s Butchers, Kirkby Stephen. Messrs Sowerby also sold 47kg Dutch Texel cross lambs to make £106.80 (227.2p/kg) selling to M Helliwell.
Carlisle’s trade was also led earlier in the week by Texels, with a sale topping call of 300p/kg for Messrs Noble, Beckermet, selling to Robert Skelton.
