The added value offered by Texel sired stock has once again been the highlight of the first full week of prime sheep trading in 2015, with Texel sired cull ewes attracting significant premiums at markets across the country.
At Newark on Saturday 3 Janaury Richard and Margaret Lawrence led the way with Texel cull ewes selling to £163, while at Wooler on Wednesday 7 January Ian Muray sold ewes to £159 apiece. Kington market in the Welsh borders also saw a solid trade, with Texel crosses from T J and B M Goodwin topping the list at £128.50.
And the trip across from Northern Ireland was worthwhile for Henry Gamble when his cull ewes sold to a top of £206 at Bentham, with a run of 29 averaging £168. And on the same day fellow Northern Irish vendor sold to a top of £200 at the same venue.
Further north at Stirling on Thursday 8 January Texel sired cull ewes were once again in demand from buyers, with prices hitting £148.50 on a number of occasions.Then on Friday at Thainstone, Aberdeenshire, prices peaked at £157 for Texels from Messrs Sutherland Sibmister.
Commenting on the prices being achieved Texel Sheep Society chief executive said it was a reflection of the ability of Texel cross ewes to carry significant yields of lean meat. “Prices such as these for cull ewes make for low ewe depreciation, another added value benefit of choosing Texels.
