Gortin Sale records 700gns top call

Demand for Texel rams continues as the NI Texel Breeders Club draws near to the close of their ram sales. The Club’s Gortin sale saw judge Marcus Barton commenced proceedings with judging the Smyths Daleside Feeds show and championship.

In the shearling class first place went to Seamus McBride, McBride Texels, Strabane, with his Kiltariff Adriano son out of a Knock Trident dam which later sold for 510gns.  This strong shearling was also chosen as Mr Barton’s Smyths Daleside champion.

Standing second in Mr Barton’s line-up was Murray Annett’s Milestonehill exhibit, a Plaucha All Rounder son out of a Maineview Vermeulen ewe.  Taking Mr Bartons’s third place rosette was a Garngour Aristotle son out of a homebred dam by Drumderg Western Star from Alistair Breen.  This sheep later sold for 400gns.

However, it was the Blue Gates pen of C and M Mullan which captured the eyes of the buyers with two Drumgooland Aga Khan son which sold for 600gns and 500gns to take the leading prices in the shearling ram trade.  Shearling ram trade averaged 365gns for 13 and 72% clearance.

Also featuring in Mr Barton’s choice for the first place ram lamb and reserve overall champion was the Blue Gates pen. Messrs Mullan later sold their Aga Khan son out of a Cairness Perfection dam for 400gns.

Standing second was Alistair Breen Drumderg exhibit, a Forkins Baz son out of a Strathbogie Uno daughter which later changed hands for 380gns.  Claiming Mr Bartons third place rosette was a Kiltariff Adriano son from Seamus McBride’s pen, who later pocketed 290gns in the post-show sale.

Next in line for a rosette was Gary Rankin’s, Garvetagh Hill exhibit.  His Hexel Brightside son out of a Garngour Vintage mother went on to sell for 700gns and lead the way as the top price of the evening.  This lamb’s pen-mate sired by Teglium Younggun and out of a Tophill Wall St dam also sold to lead the prices in the lamb sales for 650gns.  The lamb sale saw 28 lots sell to average just shy of 300gns.

The Northern Ireland Texel Club wish to thank Smyths Daleside for sponsoring the event.
