North Sheep proved another great event for the Texel breed, with the Society’s stand busy throughout the day as both members and commercial producers thronged the stand.
Attracting plenty of attention and positive comments were the sheep on the stand, a pair of Bluefaced Leicester x Texel ewes with Texel sired lambs at foot kindly supplied by Ian Murray, Wrangham Redsteads, Berwick Upon Tweed.
The four lambs suckling the ewes were also used for the Society’s ‘Guess the Weight’ competition which attracted more than 100 entries and was won by Nick Howard, Allandale, Northumberland, who guessed the exact weight of the lambs at 138.8kg.
A Texel convert, Mr Howard uses the breed on his Swaledale ewes, producing what he describes as ‘a cracking lamb’.
Society chief executive John Yates said the event had been a great day for the Texel breed and the whole sheep industry in the north of England.
“North Sheep proved, once again, to be a hugely positive, well supported event showcasing all that is good about UK sheep farming. The Society’s presence once again reinforced the strong position the breed has in northern sheep farming.”
