Shearling rams followed the seasonal trend at the Main NSA Ram Sale, Builth Wells, when recording a new centre best average of £1669, a rise of more than £375 on the year, and an 89% clearance.
Backed by a rampant commercial demand, the sale saw no fewer than six five figure sales, led by a 20,000gns call for Montana Intelligent from R and A Howells and Daughters. This one, subject to a frenzied bidding battle, is by Whitehrt Gigantic and out of a dam by Langford Boa. He had stood fifth in the pre-sale show and was the pick of Neil and Matthew Ellis, Cressage and Scholars.
Second best of the sale was an 18,000gns bid for Stonegrove Ironside from Richard and Anna Dorrell and family. This third prize winner is by Loosebeare Guardian and out of a dam by Roxburgh Empire. He found a new home with Esmor Evans, Maerdy.
Third in line at 17,000gns was the leader from regular high performer Andrew Reed and family. This was Scolton Illustrious, a son of the 24,000gns Caereinion Goliath out of a dam by the homebred Scolton Dynamo. He was taken by Llion Jones, Pant.
The Reed family then reinvested some of their earnings when paying16,000gns for Cressage Icon from Neil and Matthew Ellis. He’s a son of Maerdy Extra Special and out of a dam by Cressage Everest and has a top 25% index.
Close behind at 15,000gns was one from Gwilym and Neris Williams and family, Caron I Am Classic. He’s by Peacehay Gangnam Style and out of a Knap-bred dam by Sportsmans Cannon Ball. Buying him was A E Davies, Erwood.
And then making 10,000gns was Russell and Gill Watkins’ best of the day, Millend Imperial King. This son of the £10,000 Kelso purchase Harehead Governor and is out of a dam by Mershott Big Red. Sold with a top 10% index and having been reserve champion in the pre-sale show, he was bought by Ally Smith, Feddal Road.
Next best at 8200gns was Blaencar Icarus from Geoff Morgan and family. This is another son of Caereinion Goliath and is out of a daughter of the homebred Blaencar Bandit. Buying this one was W G Davies and Son, Hirwaun.
Not far back at 8000gns was Knap Iggy Pop from Paul Tippetts and Christine Williams. This one is by Duncryne Hakuna Matata and is out of a Sportsmans Cannon Ball-sired dam. Buying him was Elgan Davies for the Llwyngan flock.
Making 7800gns was the best of the day from Phil and Helen Weaver, Empire Im Sparta. He’s by Whitehart Game Changer and out of a dam by Cannlefaes Big Boy and went home with Christopher Cornthwaite, Stumpcross.
Then at 7500gns was the champion from the pre-sale show from Owen and Rachel Watkins, Caenantmelyn Irrestible. He’s a son of Whitehart First Class and is out of a dam by Clun Dynamo and was knocked down to J R Joseph and Co, Brecon.
The Reeds then took 6000gns for Scolton Idol. This is another son of the 24,000gns Goliath and is out of a dam by Cannlefaes Big Boy. Buying this one were T Davies and Co, Beulah.
Another from the same home then followed at 5500gns, with this being Scolton Intellectual. He’s by Duhonw Grand Slam and out of a dam by the homebred Scolton Endeavour and ws the pick of Pilkington Farmers, Buxton.
At 5000gns was Caenantmelyn Iceman from Owen and Rachel Watkins. This Whitehart First Class son is out of a dam by Donrho Captain and found a new home with Will and Emma Gittoes and family for their Bryndu flock.
Cefin Pryce then took 4800gns for Caereinion Investment, a ram with top 25% figures. Sired by Loosebeare Chief, he’s out of a dam by the homebred Caereinion Front Runner and went away with Steve and Carolyn Williams Wollascott.
Next in line at 4600gns was another from the Howells family, Montana Invention. A son of Whitehart Gingantic and out of a dam by Usk Vale Bobby Dazzler, he was bought by G E Davies and Son, Sarn.
A 4500gns call then secured Caereinion Incredible Hulk from Cefin Pryce. Sold with a top 10% index, he’s another by Loosebeare Chief and out of a dam by Caereinion Emperor. This one also went to the Wollascott flock of the Williams family.
A trio then traded at 4000gns, with all three coming from Andrew Reed and family’s Scolton flock. The first was Scolton Immortal, a Caereinion Goliath son out of a dam by Scolton Dynamo, with this one being bought by Eynon Farms, Beulah.
The next at this price was Scolton Influential. He’s again by Goliath and is out of a Whitehart Clean Cut-sired dam and was bought by E R and M James, Beulah.
And the final 4000gns call came for Scolton Im The One. Again by the 24,000gns Goliath and is out of a dam by Wilodge Bravo. This one was knocked down to the Williams family, Clun.
