Henry Gamble wins Balmoral Championship
It was ladies day among the championships in the Texel classes at Balmoral Show, Lisburn, today, with the championship going to the winner of the aged ewe class, a one-crop ewe from Henry Gamble and reserve spot falling to Richard Henderson’s leader from the gimmer class.
Judge Victor Chestnutt of the Clougher flock said the females had been stronger throughout the classes and his overall champion had stood out in the ewe class from the minute he saw her. “She has an excellent carcass, great legs and plenty of breed character. She’s an all round excellent ewe and exactly what I wanted in my champion.”
Champion at Balmoral Show was Henry Gamble’s one-crop ewe
GRS1100445, a Derryvore Ranger daughter
The champion, GRS1100445, is a daughter of 3800gns Derryvore Ranger out of a dam by Llangwm Ollie Magurne. The dam had been purchased in vitro when Mr Gamble bought the champion’s grand dam, a Croft ewe.
Springhill genetics were behind the reserve champion, with Mr Henderson’s gimmer HBR1200385, being a daughter of Springhill Silverstone. This one is out of a dam by Douganhill McFly. She comes from the sale female family as the champion at Balmoral two years ago, also from the Ballynahone flock.
Taking the award for the best animal of the opposite sex to the champion was the winner from the shearling ram class, John Foster’s shearling Springhill Twenty Twelve. This is a son of Halley Pathfinder out of a dam by Blackstown Milo.
The show was the first to be held at the new Balmoral Park Showground, Lisburn, with exhibitors and visitors around the Texel ring warmly congratulating the RUAS on the excellent facilities provided at the new site.
