Texels continued their successful run at this year’s major winter fairs, picking up both the championship and reserve overall championship at the Welsh Winter Fair, Builth Wells, as well as the reserve pairs carcass championship.
Topping the honours list for the breed was Robin Slade, Almeley, Herefordshire, with his pair of 76kg pair of Dutch Texel ewe lambs from his Weekfield flock. This pair notched up Mr Slade’s third overall title at the event, having last won it in the early 1990s. He also took the reserve championship in the pairs section of the event’s carcass competition with similarly bred entries. Mr Slade’s overall champions sold at £600 each to David Jerman, Brilley.
Taking the reserve supreme championship were another pair of Texels, this time from Hay-On-Wye husband and wife team Steve and Sara Gibbons. This pair, from last year’s supreme winners, later sold to Morgan Family Butchers for £430 each.
