Aged tup leads quality Balmoral line up

An aged tup led the way at this year’s first major show of the season, Northern Ireland’s Balmoral Show, with quality in depth in every class.

This year’s Balmoral Show, Northern Ireland, saw what judge John Mellin described as a ‘tremendous show’ of Texels, with quality in every class.

“The sheep were a true credit to the breeders and the standard was great throughout the morning. At the top of every class there were some great sheep and the strength in depth was good to see. It has been an honour and a pleasure to judge such a good show of sheep.”

Leading the way was the winner of the aged ram class, Springwell Voltage, a ram owned in a three-way partnership by the Aiken family, Edna Corbett and Martin Cromie.

Voltage, a son of the 2014 sire of the year, Oberstown Usain Bolt, is out of a dam by Derryvore Ranger and was bought at Lanark in 2014 for 2000gns. Previously shown only once he picked up a first prize at Castlewellan last summer as a shearling tup.

Mr Mellin said he admired the tup for his great carcass, locomotion and easy fleshing nature. “He’s everything a Texel tup should be, well balanced with a good top and a great end on him. He was a worthy winner on the day.”

Standing reserve overall champion and picking up the award for the animal of the best opposite sex to the champion was the winner of the aged ewe class from Alastair Gault’s Forkins flock. This was GAF1300887. Sired by Knock Travis she is out of a Douganhill McFly dam and was third as a gimmer at Balmoral on her only previous show outing.

Leading the way in the shearling rams was Paul and Baillie O’Connor with an Oberstown Usain Bolt son out of a Millars ewe by Sandelford Premier.

Then in the gimmers the winner was another from Alastair Gault, GAF1501354, with this being a Duncryne Uber Cool daughter out of an Ettrick bred dam by Knock Papoose. She was one of a quartet of fellow family members out at the show, with the first and fourth prize gimmers and the second and third prize aged ewes all being full sisters.

Following that the ram lamb class was won by James Herdman with HKP1600943, a Clarks Wagner son out of a Drumgooland bred dam by Oberstown Usain Bolt.

In the ewe lamb class the red ticket went to Paul and Baillie O’Connor with this being by Usk Vale Warlord and out of a dam by Duncryne Uber Cool.
