Education Awards

The Texel Sheep Society Educational Awards are awarded to the students who attain the highest mark on a sheep production related Honours Research Project.

The awards of £250 are offered to students at four Universities representing Northern Ireland – Greenmount, Scotland – SRUC, Wales – Aberystwyth University and England – Harper Adams.

2025

SRUC – Sophie Cameron’s dissertation looked at ‘The Factors Affecting Crossbred Hill Lamb Horn Phenotypes and the Resultant Relationship with Valuable Performance Traits’.

Aberystwyth – Nia Fflur Williams ran an investigative project examining ‘Wool Fibre Diameter as a Potential Indicator of Resilience in Performance Recorded Lambs’.

Harper Adams – Anna Herbert – conducted a research project which looked at ‘Integrating Sustainability into Sheep Enterprises: Reducing Carbon Emissions’.

Greenmount – Thomas Kerr – investigated ‘The Factors Affecting the Periparturient Rise of Faecal Egg Count in Ewes’.

SRUC – Lyndsey Brown – dissertation entitled ‘Is the Scottish Government target of a 31% reduction in agriculture emissions by 2032 possible in cross-bred ewe flocks?’.

Aberystwyth – Logan Williams – sought to understand the factors affecting store lamb systems with a dissertation on ‘What is the most efficient system of finishing store lambs for the food chain, by maximising performance and
reducing production costs?’

Harper Adams – Molly Bampton – dissertation took in the subject of colostrum with the subject being ‘An evaluation of on-farm and laboratory analysis to assess colostrum quality of UK dairy ewes’.

Greenmount – Beulah Nesbitt – a study which focussed on the start of life ‘Investigating factors influencing colostrum quality of lowland breeding ewes and subsequent effect on lamb mortality’

2023

SRUC – Leigh Bell – an investigation into the impact of simultaneous infections on the productivity of lambs.

Aberystwyth – Carys Vaughan – her dissertation on the ‘Perceptions and attitudes of UK farmers towards Iceberg Diseases. Is there an opportunity for an iceberg disease screening scheme to enhance the market value of breeding ewes and ewe lambs?’

Harper Adams – Martha Racey – a research project looking at rearing methods employed by sheep farmers across the UK when it came to rearing orphan lambs.

Greenmount – Danielle Connelly – investigation into ‘The effect of storage conditions on immunoglobulin, bacterial and nutritional properties of ovine colostrum and colostrum substitutes’ which sought to determine how best to store colostrum and subsitutes to maximise their effectiveness.

2022

SRUC – Georgina Milne – Georgina’s dissertation titled ‘The Effects of Forage Type on the Growth and Profitability of Indoor Fattened Shetland Ram Lambs’.

Aberystwyth – Michelle D’Costa – Michelles’s investigation examined the effect of oxygen scavengers and temperature on nematode faecal egg counts in stored faeces.

Harper Adams – Claire Thompson – Claire’s dissertation entitled ‘A systematic literature review: Does Catalase improve the function of frozen-thawed ram sperm?’

Greenmount – Luke Norris – Luke’s report looked into the factors which would reduce the level of lameness within the UK Flock.

2021

SRUC – Abbie McGillvray – Abbie’s dissertation titled ‘Ovine Pulmonary Adenocarcinoma and its threat to the sustainability of hill farming in Scotland’.

Aberystwyth – Ffion Mair Havard – Ffion’s investigation examined the effect of Farm Type on antibiotic usage within sheep flocks in Wales.

Harper Adams – Emily Turner – Emily’s dissertation entitled ‘The effect of cryopreserved semen quality on implantable embryo recovery rates in sheep and embryo transfer programs’.

Greenmount – Jennifer Devlin – Jennifer’s report looked into the factors which determine the number of lambs weaned per ewe in a commercial lowland sheep flock.

2020

SRUC – Jack Adkin – investigated the performance of different pure and crossbred animals in terms of lamb survival and growth in an extensive environment.

Aberystwyth – Dafydd Roberts – his research project titled ‘Assessing the impact of adapting drug administration strategies on anthelmintic efficacy and use in lambs.’

Harper Adams – Rebecca Rainey – her dissertation delved into the relationship between ewe foot health, body condition score and scanning percentage.

Greenmount – Rachel Jordan – project investigated faecal egg counts in sheep dung samples in relation to anthelmintic treatment and the lifecycle of Calicophorn daubneyi.
