Despite the prime hogget trade not reaching the exceptional levels seen last spring, those selling Texel-sired hoggets have continued to reap premium prices across the country.
At Carlisle on Monday (4 March) Texel cross hoggets sold to top the market at £120/head, with Dutch Texel crosses grossing £116.80.
Meanwhile, at Rugby on the same day Texels took both the top price/head and the top price/kg, with 46kg Texel crosses selling to 230p/kg and £106/head.
And, in the south of Scotland St Boswells Market on Monday saw Texel cross hoggets sell to the top price/head of £107/head, with others at £105.
Back in the midlands, Newark’s sale on Saturday (2 March) saw Texels lead the prices at £103.50/head and 236p/kg, with Texel sired lambs taking a number of the top prices on the day.
Lancaster Mart, also saw Texels leading the prices on Monday, selling to a high of £91/head.
Cull ewe sales have also seen Texels leading the way and helping keep flock depreciation low for those running flocks of Texel cross ewes.
At Newark the best Texel cross cull ewes sold at £150/head, with others at £148 and £141, while at Wooler Texels again topped the prices when making £109.80, with Texel cull ewes at Rugby selling to £103 and Carlisle seeing Texels at £105.50, again the top price of the day.
