Shearling ram leads Welsh National Texel Trade at 4400gns

Texel males and females were both in big demand at the breeds Welsh National Sale, Welshpool on Saturday (23 August), with a 79% clearance rate in the ram lambs and an 85% clearance in the shearling ewes and 21 more ram lambs sold on the year and averages rising in all sections.

Trade peaked at 4400gns for a shearling ram from Cefin Pryces Caereinion flock, with Society chief executive John Yates describing the sale as a vote of confidence in the breed which continues to outperform other terminal sires in all situations.

Texels are without a doubt the most versatile terminal sired breed in the UK and the demand for the breed at the Welsh National Sale clearly demonstrated the demand for well fleshed, correct sheep to work in a variety of farming systems in a wide range of climatic an topographical conditions across Wales.

Topping the price list was the reserve male champion and first prize shearling tup Caereinion U R The One at 4400gns. This is a Crailloch True Blue son out of a Caereinion Number One Dam with an index of 258 and was fourth at the Royal Welsh this time round. He sold to Steve Williams for the Wollaston flock, Shrewsbury.

The next best price of the day came in the ram lambs when Procters Farm, Clitheroe, under the guidance of flock manager Jeff Aiken, took a bid of 4000gns for Procters Ventura, a so of the 11,000gns 2013 Lanark champion Tophill Union Jack out of a dam by Sportsmans Scania and with an index of 266. He sold in a two-way split to Messrs Boden and Davies, Sportsmans, and David Houghton, Tophill.

Then at 2600gns was Procters Vision, another by the 11,000gns Union Jack and out of a Scania daughter. He was the choice of R and E Owen, Tal-Y-Cafn, Conwy.

A few lots later at the same money was Young Venture Vantastic from Gracie Rose Holden. This Teiglum Unique son is out of a Knock Playboy dam and was first place in the YDP ram lamb class in the pre-sale show. Taking this one home was W T Davies, Penparc, Ceredigion.

Following that at 2000gns was the pre-sale champion Sportsmans Volta, a Milnbank Ur The Boy son out of a dam by Milnbank Special One and with an index of 241 from the Boden and Davies partnership. This one sold to W E and E Roberts and A and M E Owen, Bryn Golau, Llansannan.

And making the same money was Sportsmans Van Wilder, another by Ur The Boy and this time out of an Anglezarke Nimrod daughter. Picking out this one was B Jones, Rhandir, Pwllheli.

Following these at 1700gns was Ryder’s Varka, a Brackenridge Strongbow son out of a dam by Connachan Sharky from T Ryder. This lamb sold to noted the breeder of the day’s top priced lot, Cefin Pryce, Caereinion.

Taking a 1650gns call was Sportsmans Vince from Messrs Boden and Davies. He’s a son of the 42,000gns Tullylagan Tonka out of a Mellor Vale Officer dam and was bought by G R Davies, Cwmtirmynach, Gwynedd.

His pen mate, Sportsmans Victor II the made 1600gns when selling to Colin and Wendy Phillips, Sarnsfield, Herefordshire. He’s by Milnbank Ur The Boy and out of a Baltier Panther dam.

And at the same price was Llyfni Viper from the Williams family. This Brackenridge Undercover son is out of a dam by Kelso Picasso and sold to A Williams, Pistyll, Gwynedd.

It was back to the shearlings for the next best price, with another 1600gns bid made for the Quick family’s Loosebeare Umpire II, with this being a Meon Down Spartacus son out of a dam by Kingsland Lion. He sold to Red House Farm, Aberhafesp, Newtown.

Then at 1500gns was Nicola Hartwrights Whitehart Update, a Kingsland Top Gun son out of an Ellen Valley Nemesis daughter. He also headed home to Newtown with the Red House Farm team. 

And from the same home at 1300gns was Whitehart Up Together, a Humeston Trident son out of a Broomknowes Lion King daughter. He sold to T H, M E and E J Jones, Dolanog, Powys.

Shearling Ewes

A healthy demand for shearling ewes saw the clearance rate settle at 85%, with 68 sold to level at £578.74.

Topping the prices with a high of 1700gns was Gordon Grays female champion GGH 1303102 from the Ettrick flock. Shes a Knock Topaz daughter out of a dam by Annan Manitou and sold with an index of 309 to Messrs Owen and Thomas, Rose Villa, Llanon

Selling at 1200gns was another of Gordons GGH1303166, a Muiresk Blondin daughter out of a dam by Ettrick Rob Roy. She also heads back to Llanon with Messrs Owen and Thomas.

Following that at 1100gns was Gareth Jones’ gimmer from the Meifod flock, JXF1301633, a Kelso Pavaotti daughter out of a dam by Cowal Powerhouse. She sold to S J Parmer, Idlicote.

Just shy of that at 1050gns was Cefin Pryce’s best, PEC130021, a Caereinion Number One daughter out of a dam by Summerwood Grad Union. This one was the choice of J Lea, Hales, Shropshire.

And making 1000gns was Carl Henry Bellisreserve female champion, BCY1300286, a Teiglum Theo daughter out of a Sportsmans Oscar dam. She went to Messrs Chapman,Wirswall, Shropshire.

The same money saw Messrs Boden and Davies sell a Milnbank Times Square daughter, BGS1300796. This is out of a dam byHen Gapel Royal Gold and sold to G R Williams, Frm, Sennybridge

Averages; 69 gummers £578.50 (+£138.5), 19 shearling rams £1007.72 (+£121.72), 114 ram lambs £681.81 (+£30.81) (Welshpool Livestock Sales).
