Texels score double top at English Winter Fair

Texels once again soared to victory at this weekend’s English Winter Fair, Stafford, with both the show’s supreme and reserve supreme lamb championships taken by lambs by Dutch Texel sires.

Taking the supreme title was a pair of purebred Dutch Texels from Northamptonshire-based David and Linda Wadland. This duo were by a tup bred by David and Matthew Prince, Chesterfield and bought at Ruthin last year.

This pair weighed in at 88kg and were the choice of judge Rob Rattray having already won the purebred championship. “There are an exceptional pair of lambs throughout, handling well on the loins and with good full gigots.”

Standing reserve overall were the champion pair of untrimmed lambs, a pair of Dutch Texels from Herefordshire-based Robin Slade. This pair, by a homebred sire tipped the scales at 88kg too and were close to taking the overall title, according to Mr Rattray. “There was very little between them.”
