Ewe lamb takes top honours at Royal Welsh Show

RWAS logoContinuing the trend a major shows this year it was another win for a female at the Royal Welsh Show this week, with a ewe lamb from John and Heulwen Jones taking the breed championship under judge Roger Strawbridge of the Tamnamoney flock, Coleraine.

The winner is a daughter of leading sire Millars Outstanding out of a dam by Craighead Hercules and was on her first outing of the season, with her second and only other show likely to be the Anglesey Show.

The ewe lamb was picked by Mr Strawbridge for her exceptional fleshing, style and showring presence. “For a ewe lamb she is truly outstanding. From the minute I saw her she owned the ring and has all the characteristics I expect to see in a modern Texel, flesh, character and great correctness.”

Reserve overall was the reserve female champion, a two crop ewe from Procters Farm’s Procters flock. This one, shown by flock manager Jeff Aiken is by Douganhill McFly and was bought from Alistair Gault’s Forkins flock for 6000gns at the Northern Stars sale. She has been flushed successfully, with a strong crop of both ewe and ram lambs on the ground this year. This was the Procters flock’s first appearance at the Royal Welsh.

Taking the male championship was an aged ram from Colin Ponting’s Penstones flock. This was Millend Piece of Gold, a Millend Off the Scale son out of a dam by Castlecairn Investment.

Reserve male champion was a ram lamb from John Mellin’s Hull House flock. This was a Castlecairn Red Arrow son out of a homebred dam by Castleknowe Matchmaker.

Mr Strawbridge praised the depth of quality in all the classes, saying it was an exceptional show of Texels throughout.

“Every class handled well with great gigots and, pleasingly, some well shouldered sheep too. There have been years when I’ve wondered if some breeders were losing the shoulder on their Texels, but this show of sheep has reaffirmed my believe in the strength in depth in the breed.”
