Ram lamb leads Welsh National Sale at 3800gns

Saturday’s Welsh National Sale, Welshpool, saw a top call of 3800gns as the sale average rose by more than £40 on the same sale last year for the same number sold.

Leading the prices on a solidly commercial trade was a ram lamb from Robert Pierce’s Oldford flock, Pulford, Chester. This substitute entry, Oldford Yogi Bear, is a son of Eden Valley Warrior out of a dam by Mullan Supremacy. This one sold with an index of 355 and having stood fourth in the pre-sale show. Buying him in a two way split were the Forrester family, Doonguile and Steve and Helen Smith, Pen Parc.

Next best was a 3200gns sale for Gary Scott’s Bryn-Y-Coed Yogi Bear. This son of Sportsmans Tremendous II is out of a dam by the 42,000gns Tullylagan Tonka and was the pick of Richard Wilson, Eden Valley.

Following him was a 2800gns bid for Arkle Youre In from George Wilkinson and family. Coming off the back of an exceptional trade at the Scottish National Sale just two days earlier, this lamb is by Halbeath VIP and out of a dam by Finevalley Triple Crown, making him a full ET brother to the 20,000gns Arkle You Bet. He was knocked down to Carl Henry Bellis, Cosyn.

Then making 2700gns was Knap Yankee Doodle from Robert Cockburn. Sired by the 145,000gns Knap Vicious Sid, he is out of a dam by Ettrick Rainbow Warrior and was bought by M and S Jones for their Racecourse flock.

And after that at 2600gns was the reserve male champion from the Draper family’s Claybury flock. This was Claybury Yacht, a Stainton Vantage II son out of a dam by Clinterty Samba. Buying him was R A Hughes, Penmynydd, Anglesey.

A 2100gns sale for the last lamb through the ring was the next best price of the afternoon, with this paid for Scholars YSL from Will McCaffrey. He’s a son of Eden Valley Whizz Kid out of Stainton bred dam by Anglezarke Uno and was bought by Matthew Ellis for the Cressage flock.

The best from the Procters pen then sold at 1600gns, with this being Procters Yen, a Llangwm Warrio son out of a dam by Sportsmans Scania. He sold with an index of 327 and was taken by A Thomas for the Brynmeini flock, Pembrokeshire.

After that was a 1400gns bid for substitute entry Knap Yoyo from Robert Cockburn. A son of Tullagh Whiskey he is out of a Baltier Rascal I daughter and was the pick of J and P Barlow for the Mossgiel flock.

Shearling rams sell to 3100gns

The first prize shearling ram from the pre-sale show led the trade at 3100gns, with this being Caereinion Warrior from Cefyn Pryce. This son of Ryders Varka is out of a dam the homebred Caereinion Number One and was knocked down to Mark James for the Ripperstown flock, Pembrokeshire.

Just shy of that at 3000gns was the best of the day from Nicola Hartwright, Whitehart Wild Eye. He’s by the 7800gns Cherryvale Shergar and out of a dam by Broomknowes Lion King. This one sold to David and Thomas Bradley Farmer for their Meon Springs flock.

Following him at 2000gns was another from the same pen, Whitehart Worker. By Humestone River Dance he is out of a dam by Cherryvale Shergar and was bought by Messrs Davies Bros, Penparc, Ceredigion.

Close behind at 1900gns was Loosebeare Wayout from the Quick family. This is a son of the homebred Loosebeare Voomer and out of a dam by Loosebeare Rebel. A second prize winner he sold to J R, R M and J P Andrew, Manafon, Powys.

The Quicks then sold Loosebeare Welsh at 1450gns, with this one being a Hull House Special Brew son out of a dam by Bettonfield Janitor. He found a new home with G Deakins, Heyhope, Powys.

And another from the same home then sold at 1250gns. This was Loosebeare Waei Inn, a Whitehart Spot On son out of a dam by Kingsland Lyon. Buying this one were D and G Andrew, Bryngroes, Myfod.

A pair then sold at 1200gns, with the first being Seiont Waldo from Osian Rhys. He’s by Boghouse V-Ewe Finder and out of a dam by Knock Stetson. Buying him was H L Jones, Llanwnda, Gwynedd.

The other at this price was Angela Nairey’s Meinspride Winston, a son of the 2014 Royal Highland Show champion Glenway Universe out of a dam by Haddo Supreme.

Average; 29 shearling rams £996.78 (Welshpool Livestock Sales).

Shearling ewes sell to 2800gns

A sustained and solid demand for shearling ewes saw a top call of 2800gns and an 86% clearance achieved, with the top priced lot being from David Gray’s Tima flock.

This was GCT1505306, a Castlecairn Vital Spark daughter bred from a dam by Glenside Ring A Ding and was bought by Maurice Hardy-Bishop, Grey Peel, Roxburghshire.

Then making 2500gns was Peter Woof’s pre-sale female and reserve overall champion. This substitute entry, WPS1500814, is an ET bred gimmer by Anglezarke Uno out of a dam by Sportsmans Tremendous II and was sold to Paul Delves, Churchstoke, Powys.

Selling at 2400gns was W T Davies and Co’s first in, DWC1500863, from the Canllefaes flock. This is a daughter of Vale Ultra out of a dam by Scrogtonhead Pioneer and was taken by J R, R M and J P Andrew, Manafon, Powys.

Following her at 2000gns was a gimmer from Robert Pierce’s Oldford flock, PRE1500566. She’s by Anglezarke Uno and out of a dam by Cambwell Rob Roy and was bought by A E Jones, Gwynfs, Carmarthenshire.

Then at 1600gns was Robert Bennett’s BFE1505006, a daughter of Plasucha Va Va Voom and is out of a dam by Glenside Ring a Ding. She sold to J Lea, Hales, Shropshire.

Next up were a pair at 1500gns, with the first of these being a substitute entry from the Boden and Davies team, BGS1501795, a Teiglum Vogue daughter out of a dam by Milnbank Special One. She sold to T R Davies, Eglwys Bach.

The second to sell at this level was another from Robert Pierce, PRE1500581. She’s by Tophill Union Jack and out of a dam by Mitchelhiil Paparazzi. This one was bought by Paul Delves, Churchstoke.

Yaya Toure scores in pre-sale show at Welsh National Sale


A Strathbogie Whiplash son from the Sportsmans flock of Messrs Boden and Davies was tapped out as champion in the pre-sale show at the Welsh National Show, Welshpool, with this being Sportsmans Yaya Toure. He’s out of a dam by Milnbank Special One.

Standing reserve overall was the winner of the gimmer class from Peter Woof. This was WPS1500814, n Anglezarke Uno daughter out of a dam by Sportsmans Tremendous.

Then reserve male champion was Claybury Yacht from the Draper family. This Stainton Vantage II son is out of a dam by Clinterty Samaba I.

And reserve female champion was another from the Sportsmans flock, this time their gimmer BGS1501795, a Teiglum Vogue daughter out of a dam by Milnbank Special One.
