2015 AGM & Social Weekend – St Andrews Report
The 2015 Society AGM and Social Weekend gained an unexpected guest in the form of Storm Abigail, but despite high winds and rain her presence failed to put a dampener on the 2015 AGM and Social weekend.
Held at the luxurious Fairmont St Andrews Hotel on the beautiful Fife coast line, the event kicked off with a drinks reception followed by a sumptuous buffet. Society presentations were made to retirees, director Roy Hughes and office staff Angela Dobson. Alan Clark picked up the appropriately named ‘Sire of the Year’ award for Garngour Vintage and members thanked Henry Gamble for his time as chairman and his wife Alice for her support over the last two years.
One of Henry’s last acts as Chairman was to announce the recipient of his President’s award, and his choice of Keith Jamieson couldn’t have been better received. Keith was genuinely surprised and delighted; the Texel Members were unanimous in their approval giving this highly respected and loved breeder a well deserved standing ovation and round of applause, much to his surprise.
The Race-night that followed proved to be one of the most popular nights of entertainment ever experienced at a Society Social weekend, If you missed it – you missed out! The eventual winning team was led by Andy Barr who won by a nose chased closely by Keith Jamieson’s team.
Saturday brought a bright windy day for the Highland games and Stock Judging competition, judged by Keith Jamieson and with thanks to David McCall – Noresk, David McKerrow – Nochnary and Robert Cockburn – Knap, for providing the quality stock. The winner was Nigel Hamill, Ballynadrenta Texels, who received a large bottle of liquid refreshment for his correct assessment.
The Texel Highland games involved ginger wigs and Tartan hats, caber tossing, wellie wanging, haggis chucking, weight lifting and a wheelbarrow race that was beyond competitive!
Following lunch and the AGM, the pre Dinner Dance drinks reception took place before those present enjoyed a delicious dinner of local Fife beef, sponsored by Galloway and McLeod and sourced by incoming Chairman David McKerrow, and fresh Sky Salmon. Graham Hill presented Kirsty Harrison, Youth Cancer Trust representative, with a cheque for £5225, the culmination of a year of fund raising events by the Society and Clubs. This fund continues to grow with further donations being made on Graham’s 4 Nations Challenge ‘Just Giving’ site and from Texel regional Clubs.
Guests were entertained by after dinner speaker Hamish Dykes and then danced the night away to the music of the ‘Big Squeeze’, a proper ceilidh enjoyed by all and a fitting end to a fantastic Texel weekend.
