The main NSA Ram Sale, Builth Wells, saw Texels again the in demand breed with well grown, fleshy shearlings catching buyers’ eyes throughout the day, with shearling rams achieving an impressive 89% clearance and 78% of ram lambs forward being sold.
Topping the trade at 6800gns was the much fancied Canllefaes Vantastic from W T Davies and Co. This son of Tycam Smart is out of a dam by Scrogtonhead Pioneer and was subject to fierce bidding before being knocked down to Messrs Quick, Loosebeare, and Jim and Nicola Hartwright, Whitehart, in a two-way split.
Second best of the day was a 6000gns call for the pre-sale champion and first prize winning ram lamb, Blaencar Waratah from the Morgan family, Sennybridge. This one is by Springwell Ulsterboy and out of a dam by Cambwell Rob Roy and sold to Charlie Boden for the Sportsmans and Mellor Vale flocks.
Then making 5000gns was one of the earliest lots of the day, the Reed family’s Scolton Vanquish. Sired by Caerionion Rocket and out of a dam by Caereinion Master Class he sold to Esmor Evans, Maerdy, having stood second in the pre-sale show.
Next best after that was a 4400gns call for another of the ram lambs, this time Cennen Warrior from Hywel Thomas. This son of Ettrick Underwriter is out of a dam by Cambwell Rankin. He stood third in the open class in the pre-sale show and sold to Messrs Moffat and Bradley-Farmer.
Selling at 3000gns was Mike and Ella James’ best of the day from the Duhonw flock, shearling ram Duhonw Velocity. He’s by Wayside U Bet, the champion from the 2013 Welsh National Sale, and is out of a dam by Canllefaes Oscar. Selling with an index of 244 he heads to the Isle of Man with Messrs Kermode, Orrisdale.
Just shy of that at 2900gns was Logie Durno Vantastic from the Ingram family. This one is a son of Haddo Titan and is out of a Cowal Rising Star daughter. He sold with an index of 398 and was bought by Evan, Sian and Elgan Davies for the LLwyngan flock.
The Davies family then recouped some of their outlay when selling Llwyngan Volcano for 2700gns, a son of Tynewydd Switcheon out of a dam by Meinspride Ringo to the Jones Family Robleston Hall, Camrose, Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire.
Following that at 2600gns was another from the Canllefaes pen of the Davies family, Canllefaes Victorious. He’s similarly bred to the sale topper, being sired by Tycam Smart and out of another dam by Scrogtonhead Pioneer.
After that came a 2500gns call for Coolingel Vakr, a Coolingel Thor son from Messrs Creer, Ballaglonney. He’s out of a dam by Llegodig Noble and sold to Tecwyn Jones, Nebo, Llarwst.
And then selling for 2300gns was Cefyn Pryce’s Caereinion Valuable. This is a son of Llegodig Reuinion out of a dam by Caereinion Number One and sold with an index of 220. He was knocked down to the Reed family, Scolton.
A pair then shared a bid of 2200gns, with the first of these being Hollyford Venus from Alan and Barbara Draper. He’s a son of Goldies Supreme out of a dam by the homebred Hollyford Likely Lad and has an index of 356.
The other at this money was Teilo Wrnach Gawr from John Eirion Davies and family. This son of Deveronvale Viscount is out of a dam by Knock Nugget and sold with an index of 293.
