Texel breeders enjoyed a robust day’s trading at yesterday’s NSA Early Ram Sale, Builth Wells, with shearling rams achieving a 92% clearance. Topping the prices at 1200gns was the pre-sale champion under judge Russell Watkins, a shearling ram from Barbara and Jo Smith’s Slapton flock, Northamptonshire. This was the second consecutive year the Smiths had led the sale at 1200gns.
This was Slapton Very Nice, a son of Scolton Top Spec and out of a dam by Teilo Pel-Draediwr. He sold to R E and C J Davies, Yockleton, Shrewsbury. The Smiths also took reserve champion with another shearling ram, with this one, Slapton Valiant, selling at 1100gns. He’s by Peacehay Razzle Dazzle and sold to K and J Davies, Knighton.
Next best at 1000gns was aged ram Sportsmans Upright from Andrew Thomas’ Brnmeini flock. This son of Tullylagan Tonka is out of a dam by Baltier Panther.
The top priced female was 400gns for the first prize shearling ewe from Deri and Marjorie Morgan’s Tynewydd flock and Roland and Gina Watkins, Cwmcerrig, also received the same price for one of their shearling ewes. The top price ewe lamb was 320gns for a lamb from Tomos and Selwyn Evans’ Welsh flock.
Overall 115 shearling rams sold to average £512.40, while shearling ewes averaged £332.77 and ewe lambs leveled at £336.
