Thunderbirds are go at Great Yorkshire
The championship title at this year’s Great Yorkshire Show stayed in the county as John Mellin and family, Skipton, claimed the top ticket with their aged ram, Langside Thunderbird under judge Pip Kermode, Isle of Man.
Thunderbird, a 2012-born son of Brackenridge Strongbow is out of a dam by Claybury Midlander. Bought at Kelso in 2013 for £6500 he was on his first show outing of this year and was praised by Mr Kermode for his strength and power.
“I simply couldn’t go past him for fleshing, style and breed character. He’s exactly what a Texel tup should be and for a three year old ram is carrying himself exceptionally well.”
Standing reserve overall and reserve male champion was the winner of the open ram lamb class from the Boden and Davies partnership’s sportsman’s flock. This was BGS1501750, a son of Strathbgogie Untouchable out of a dam by Baltier Panther which is a full sister to the dam of the 18,000gns Sportsmans Unbeatable.
Mr Kermode said the lamb as a credit to the breed for his eveness of fleshing, but just couldn’t get past the older ram for power.
Picking up the female championship in a hotly contested section were Gordon and David Gray with their shearling ewe. This one, GGH144073 is by 4100gns sire Sportsmans Unimog and is out of a dam by the 46,000gns Foyleview Superstar. Her dam was champion at Peebles and is from the same family as the 11,000gns Ettrick Spice Girl.
Following her to the reserve female title was the winner of the ewe lamb class from the Clark family. This was CFT1503895, a daughter of Castlecairn Vavavoom out of a dam by Strathbogie Smokey Blue. She had previously been first prize ewe lamb at the Royal Highland.
Taking top spot in the homebred shearling ram class was Mark Ireland with his ram Heys Vanquish, a Knock Utopia son.
Then in the open shearling ram class the winner was Peter Longdin’s Hilltop Viceroy, a Hilltop Uncle Sam son.
Leading the open recorded ram lamb class was another from the Boden and Davies team, BGS1500319, with the aged ewes won by Keith, Alan and Roy Campbell with CKC1201943 from their Cowal flock. This one is by Cambwell Socrates.
Leading the way in the group of three were William and Elizabeth McCaffrey, with Gordon Gray second.
