Supreme Champion Texel – QEL1302123 – Devon Show  2014 – E W Quick & Sons, Loosebeare

Quicks’ Gimmer Goes All the Way at Devon County

This year’s British Texel Sheep Society southern feature show at Devon County Show, Exeter, was a memorable one for the Quick family when their shearling ewe, Loosebeare Unique, was tapped out as interbreed sheep champion from an entry of more than 1500 sheep.

The interbreed win, the Quick family’s third in five years, came off the back of the Texel pairing of Loosebeare Unique and the male champion, the Chave family’s shearling tup Peacehay Untouchable, being placed champion in the interbreed pairs competition.

In Thursday’s Texel breed classes Unique, had, according to judge John North, been a clear choice for the championship ticket. “To be invited to judge this special event is a privilege and one that I will remember for some time. My champion in Paul Quick’s Shearling ewe has depth and length and carries evenness of flesh, capped with a real touch of class, I’m sure we will be seeing more of this gimmer.’

Sired by the 9000gns Hull House Special Brew, the champion QEL1302123, is out of a Gaitsgill Officer sired dam. She was on her first show outing of the season.Taking the reserve championship award under Mr North was the Chave family’s shearling tup Peacehay Untouchable, himself a son of the 18,000gns Allanfauld Rockafella and out of a dam by Tycam Napleon.

As well as a quality filled line-up of Texels ringsiders were also treated to a host of visitations at the Show, with the Rt Hon Owen Pattersen dropping in to speak with both Paul Quick and judge John North.

Additionally, both the show president and vice-president visited the Texel ring to chat with exhibitors and Society chief executive in this the Society’s 40th anniversary year. Mr Yates said he was delighted to see such a strong show of commercially orientated Texels in one of the strongest sheep farming county’s of the UK. “It’s always a pleasure to support members at our Club and Society events and its extra special this year as the Devon County is our southern feature show in our 40th Anniversary.”

Taking first place in the aged tups was Paul Quick with Caereinion Top Notch, a Caereinion Number One son out of a Summerwood Grand Union daughter, while the ram lamb class was won by the Alford family with their Strathbogie Terminator sired lamb. In the aged ewes the Quicks were again to the fore with a daughter of Summerwood Grand Union, sire of the 120,000gns Loosebeare Imp, with the top spot in the ewe lambs taken  by the Quick family again with a Knock Orion sired lamb.
